About PageSlayers:

PageSlayers Summer Camp, a 2016 Knight Arts Challenge Winner, was born out of the desire to provide free creative writing summer camps to 4th and 5th graders in Opa-Locka, Florida, and to cultivate the next generation of writers-of-color in South Florida. Our camp sessions provide access to in-depth, intensive, and fun explorations of poetry, fiction, memoir, graphic novels, and more. Our lead teachers and supporting teachers are published, professional writers-of-color.

Each PageSlayers session takes place at The Thrive Innovation district (780 Fisherman Street, 2nd Floor, Opa-Locka, FL 33054). We employ published, professional writers-of-color. By sharing their work through performance and publication, these writers will be put in contact with new readers, building literary communities not only in Opa-Locka, but Miami as a whole. PageSlayers introduces students to writing styles outside of the standard elementary school curriculum, and provides a nurturing, supportive environment that encourages creative self-expression and positive experiences with reading and writing.
